What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are custom-designed and fabricated restorations that blend naturally with the color and shape of your natural teeth. After determining that a crown is right for you, Dr. Striebel will prep your tooth by precisely removing damaged material. This process will also create a more solid base for your restoration. Then he will take impressions which will be used to design your crown.
In many cases, Dr. Striebel will use our CEREC® (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) system for same-day crowns. The digital images will transfer to a milling machine, which works much like a 3-D printer. In just a few minutes, the device will generate a zirconia restoration made specifically to match your teeth. After making sure that it fits correctly and meets your cosmetic goals, Dr. Striebel will attach it to your tooth that same day using dental cement. If you do not qualify for one-day treatment, he will send your impressions to a top dental lab. There, ceramists will craft a custom crown to match your smile.
Is a Dental Crown Right for You?
Dental crowns can perform a wide array of functions, making them one of the most versatile restorative treatments. Among other applications, crowns can:
- Strengthen a weakened tooth
- Conceal dramatic cosmetic flaws, such as internal stains
- Even out the force along your dental arch, especially if you have suffered dental erosion
- Improve the appearance of asymmetrical or unusually small teeth
- Cover up a cavity that is too large for a filling
- Restore your tooth after root canal therapy
- Sit atop a dental implant to replace a missing tooth
CEREC® Has Revolutionized Restorative Dentistry
In addition to the convenience of same-day care, CEREC® offers a number of important benefits. First, these custom-designed crowns can protect your healthy gums. Because the restorations are so precisely made, Dr. Striebel will place them entirely above your gum line. Therefore, CEREC® crowns pose virtually no risk of infection. They can also reduce your risk of tissue inflammation.
Zirconia also offers several functional benefits. This advanced material is almost as strong as metal, and with proper care, your crown can last for decades. A CEREC® crown will also fit more securely than a metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal restoration. Finally, zirconia provides an incredibly lifelike appearance. The material has a slight translucence, much like dental enamel. Therefore, your crown will have a natural sparkle, making the transition from crown to tooth virtually seamless.
